Frequently asked questions

Unlike traditional museums, here you literally walk over a real archaeological excavation. Glass floor panels let you see original 16th-century excavations beneath your feet. There are no display cases — history is right under you.

The museum displays a collection of 16th and 17th-century domestic and commercial objects found in situ: colonial ceramics, tools, fragments of Spanish and indigenous tableware, coins, and the original walls of the colonial residence once owned by Juan de Aliaga.

We strongly recommend the guided tour because the story of the objects and archaeological layers requires context to be fully appreciated. The bilingual guide turns each piece into part of a living historical narrative about 16th-century Lima.

It's an excellent option for children over 6 who have a curiosity for history. Seeing the archaeological excavation through the glass floor is a visual experience that captures young imaginations in a way no history book can replicate.

The complete guided circuit takes between 45 and 60 minutes. If you combine the visit with a walk through the Historic Center, we recommend setting aside at least half a day to make the most of the Jr. Áncash archaeological and historic zone.

Get off at the Historic Center stop and walk approximately 5 minutes to Jr. Áncash 213. The museum is very close to San Francisco Convent and Plaza Mayor, making it easy to build a complete historic circuit in a single morning.
